Atlanta Ballet Center Dance Education Name

In 2005, Ivan Pulinkala came to KSU’s Department of Theatre, Performance Studies, and Dance to develop the Program in Dance, for which he continues to serve as Director. From the beginning, Pulinkala’s vision for the new program involved community engagement and partnerships. Among the partnerships  he has helped facilitate and sustain in the past six years, it is his work with the Atlanta Ballet that has transformed the academic and professional experience of KSU undergraduate dance majors, as well as those of his Atlanta Ballet partners. Recognizing that some dance students opt out of finishing their degrees once they receive their first job offers, Pulinkala and his partners designed a program that makes it possible for KSU students and Atlanta Ballet affiliates to pursue their degrees while simultaneously gaining professional experience.

The form of collaborative dance education they agreed upon is multifaceted and mutually beneficial. KSU students are given several options to gain experience at both professional performance and administrative levels in the dance field, as well as numerous networking opportunities. The Atlanta Ballet offers KSU students discounts on AB events, including performances and classes. They also allow advanced students to audition for certain roles, and for others, the Atlanta Ballet provides internships at their Centre for Dance Education.

In turn, KSU accepts interested Atlanta Ballet company members and students at the Centre for Dance Education into the Bachelor of Arts in Dance program and, in many cases, allows these partners to apply for advanced professional credit toward their degrees based on their association with the Atlanta Ballet. In this way, both KSU students and Atlanta Ballet partners benefit from the resources of both institutions.
