History of Lily Dale
Lily Dale was founded in 1879 by a Spiritualist community. It all began in 1844 when two girls, the Fox Sisters, were said to be able to communicate with a spirit that resided in their home. This helped spark a movement which led to the formation of the Spiritualist Church. Lily Dale was not the first community of its kind, there was another well-known group called, “The Religious Society of Free Thinkers” which was established in Laona, N.Y. in 1855. The “Loana Free Association” is considered the predecessor to the current day “Lily Dale Assembly.” They define a Spiritualist on their website:
One who believes, as the basis of his or her religion, in the continuity of life and in individual responsibility. Some, but not all, Spiritualists are Mediums and/or Healers. Spiritualists endeavor to find the truth in all things and to live their lives in accordance therewith.
