The English language has gone through many phases with influences from Germany, Scandinavia, France, the Netherlands and Denmark. There are also borrowings from Latin and Greek. Below is a brief history of English along with samples of transformations as seen through biblical passages.
If you lived in Britain prior to the incursions from the Anglo-Saxons in the 5th century C.E., you would have been speaking a Brythonic language (mixed with the Roman language from the Roman occupation starting in 55 C.E.). The language spoken in Britain prior to the Celts is unknown, but some words probably live on in Brythonic.
Brythonic is also descended from the Insular language family of the Celts. Some of the Celtic words seen in English today are hubbub, dad, peat, bucket, crock, noggin, gob and nook. The Picts of northern Britain spoke Pictish, which is believed to be a sister-language of Brythonic.
