On Sunday May 22, 2011 at approximately six in the evening, Joplin, Missouri was hit by a powerful tornado. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) website, the twister "left an estimated 124 people dead and several hundred others injured. This tied the June 8, 1953, tornado that hit Flint, Mich., as the deadliest single tornado to strike the U.S. since modern tornado recordkeeping began in 1950.”
Joplin Missouri Devastated by Tornado
Bill Davis is the National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologist who reviewed the damage caused by the Joplin, Missouri tornado told CNN news, "The National Weather Service has determined the twister packed top winds of more than 200 mph, making it a 5 on the enhanced Fujita scale." Multiple sources, including CNN News and Fox News, estimate the tornado that hit Joplin is responsible for cutting a six-mile-wide path of destruction.
