From an American’s point of view, it’s hard to imagine the extent to which Leonid Brezhnev’s Communist regime could devastate the lives of ordinary Soviet citizens. The Concert, a recent collaboration between French and Russian filmmakers, offers a unique blend of comedy with serious undertones, as well as a peek into life in the USSR before the fall of the Soviet Empire.

The Concert opens, appropriately, with a rehearsal of the Bolshoi Orchestra. A lone janitor is sitting in the empty balcony, transfixed by the music he is hearing. Momentarily the janitor’s cell phone goes off, disrupting the rehearsal, and he is chastised strongly by his boss. The janitor’s past and present humiliation fuels his desire for revenge. What can he do about it? The answer comes over a fax machine: the famous Chatelet Concert Hall in Paris has had a last minute cancellation, and needs a replacement orchestra – fast.
