The Texas State Board of Education, emerged only last year from a war over social studies standards that received attention worldwide, is now set to join the fight again, this time over science education in the state.

In Texas, differences about science education usually center on whether evolution should be taught without reference to “intelligent design” or should include what amounts to a “strengths and weaknesses” approach that brings intelligent design into the classroom.

One of the proposed e-textbooks that the board will be considering when it meets on July 21-22 in Austin would teach students that the default position of science should be the idea of “intelligent design," in place of Darwinian natural selection.
